The Ottawa Senators are facing a troubling offseason as they look ahead to the 2026-27 NHL season. After a disappointing playoff exit, where they were swept by the Carolina Hurricanes, the Senators have made significant changes that have left fans concerned about the team's direction.

The most notable move was the trade of captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers, a loss that many believe will be hard to overcome. Despite acquiring star winger William Eklund from the San Jose Sharks and winger Andre Burakovsky from the Chicago Blackhawks, the Senators cannot replace Tkachuk's grit and leadership.

Additionally, the departure of franchise icon Daniel Alfredsson from the coaching staff to become an associate coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs has sent shockwaves through the fan base. The Senators still have veteran center Claude Giroux returning, but the competition in the Atlantic Division is expected to be fierce, with teams like the Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers improving significantly.

Ottawa's goaltending situation is also in flux, as they acquired veteran Samuel Ersson from the Philadelphia Flyers, but his performance has been declining over the past three seasons. With Linus Ullmark as the No. 1 netminder and young goalie Leevi Merilainen struggling, the Senators face an uphill battle just to secure a playoff spot.

The current roster feels like a fringe playoff team, lacking the depth and star power needed to contend seriously in the Eastern Conference. The Senators need to respond effectively to these challenges if they wish to avoid another step-back season in 2026-27.
