Oilers Denied Permission to Interview Cassidy

Kris Knoblauch is reportedly on shaky ground as the head coach of the Edmonton Oilers following a first-round postseason exit. Despite leading the team to consecutive Stanley Cup Final appearances in 2024 and 2025, Knoblauch's tenure is under scrutiny after the Oilers were eliminated by the Anaheim Ducks in the first round of the 2026 playoffs.

According to Frank Seravalli, the Oilers have sought permission from the Vegas Golden Knights to interview Bruce Cassidy for the coaching position, but that request has been denied. Cassidy, who was recently let go by the Golden Knights, remains under contract for one more season.

This decision by Vegas has complicated Edmonton's coaching search, as they may be looking for a replacement for Knoblauch, who has a three-year contract extension beginning July 1. Both Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl have publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the team's direction, indicating a potential rift within the organization.

If the Oilers decide to part ways with Knoblauch, he could emerge as a sought-after candidate for other NHL openings this offseason. The ongoing situation has also drawn interest from the New York Rangers, particularly concerning McDavid's future with the Oilers, as he is set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2028.
