The Utah Mammoth re-signed star center Nick Schmaltz to an eight-year, $64-million contract extension, according to The Hockey News. Schmaltz, 30, is coming off a career-best season, having recorded 24 goals and 59 points in 66 games.

This extension solidifies his position with the Mammoth as he was set to become an unrestricted free agent. The significance of Schmaltz's contract could influence other pending UFAs, such as Buffalo Sabres right winger Alex Tuch, who is 29 years old and has posted 28 goals and 57 points in 64 games this season.

Tuch, currently earning $4.75 million, is likely to seek a salary at least equal to Schmaltz's $8 million-per-season average. If Tuch performs well in the Stanley Cup playoffs, his market value may rise even further.

Additionally, the report discusses the situation of Seattle Kraken left winger Jaden Schwartz, who at 33 years old is having a down season but could still command a $6 to $7 million per year contract on a shorter-term deal.

Columbus Blue Jackets center Charlie Coyle, 34, is also mentioned as a pending UFA likely to exceed $6 million on a new contract, despite not reaching the level of Schmaltz's deal. The overall landscape of the NHL's free agent market suggests that while players with strong seasons will attract significant offers, the rising salary cap means that not all players will secure deals of Schmaltz's magnitude.
