As the NHL offseason progresses, teams are actively seeking defensive upgrades. The Philadelphia Flyers are reportedly in discussions with the Edmonton Oilers regarding a potential trade for defenseman Darnell Nurse.
According to Broad Street Hockey, the Flyers have expressed interest in acquiring Nurse, but insist that Edmonton retain part of his $9.25 million cap hit for the deal to go through. Nurse has listed three teams he would accept a trade to: the Flyers, the Penguins, and the Bruins.
However, there are complications, as the Oilers prefer not to retain any salary. The Flyers might also be hesitant to finalize a trade for Nurse while pursuing a more prominent target, reigning Norris Trophy winner Zach Werenski from the Columbus Blue Jackets.
This pursuit of Werenski could delay any potential deal for Nurse, as the Flyers weigh the long-term implications of adding Nurse's contract against their ability to keep Werenski beyond the next two years.
Additionally, Nick Seeler, a 33-year-old blueliner with a $2.7 million AAV, is speculated to be part of the trade package going to Edmonton, although other draft picks or prospects could also be included.
The Flyers may have to act quickly, as Seeler's full no-trade clause is set to expire soon, adding urgency to the negotiations ahead of the free agency window opening.
