Recent trade rumors have linked the Pittsburgh Penguins to two high-profile players: Jason Robertson of the Dallas Stars and Elias Pettersson of the Vancouver Canucks. According to The Hockey News, the Penguins could be monitoring Robertson's contract situation closely, as he is set for salary arbitration between July 20 and August 1.
Penguins GM Kyle Dubas reportedly views Robertson as a potential building block for the franchise. Josh Yohe of The Athletic noted that if Robertson is awarded a one-year contract through arbitration, it could make him more amenable to a trade, especially with the added incentive of his brother Nick's recent acquisition by the Penguins.
On the other hand, while Dan Kingerski from Pittsburgh Hockey Now mentioned that Friedman suggested Pettersson could be a good fit in Pittsburgh, he expressed skepticism due to Pettersson's declining performance and his hefty contract averaging $11.6 million annually through 2031-32.
If the Canucks decide to move Pettersson, they may need to retain part of his salary or accept an expensive contract back in return. The Penguins' interest in star players indicates their ongoing commitment to building a competitive roster as they aim for a championship run.
