NHL considers rule changes for improved gameplay

The NHL is exploring potential rule changes aimed at enhancing the game experience, as reported by The Hockey News. One proposed change is the implementation of a 1-through-8 playoff format, where the top eight teams in each conference would be seeded by regular-season points, eliminating divisional brackets.

This could create more balanced playoff matchups and prevent elite teams from facing each other too early in the playoffs. Another suggestion involves adopting a 3-2-1-0 points system for regular-season games, which would reward teams more for winning in regulation.

Currently, the NHL uses a 2-1-0 system that some believe maintains competitive balance but could hinder aggressive play. Lastly, there's a proposal to remove the two-minute minor penalty for unsuccessful goalie interference challenges, as the current rule discourages coaches from challenging subjective calls.

Although these changes are unlikely to be implemented soon, they continue to generate discussion among fans and could significantly impact the competition and overall viewer experience if revisited by the NHL.
