The NHL's Department of Player Safety, led by George Parros, is under scrutiny following the five-game suspension of Radko Gudas for kneeing Auston Matthews. Gudas's actions led to Matthews suffering a Grade 3 MCL tear and a quad contusion, effectively ending his season.
Parros defended the decision, stating they evaluate the play, not the player, and the department's process remains consistent. He acknowledged the criticism, particularly from Matthews's agent, Judd Moldaver, who described the suspension as 'laughable and preposterous.' Moldaver's comments, along with those from players like Connor McDavid and Morgan Rielly, highlight a growing dissatisfaction with the player safety protocols.
Rielly noted that there is always room for improvement in player safety, hinting that player input is valuable in these processes. Parros emphasized that while he stands by the decision, he is open to evolving the department's approach if necessary, ensuring that player safety remains a priority.
However, he also pointed out that there are no systematic issues currently evident in the game that would necessitate immediate changes.
