Reports indicate that Wild GM Bill Guerin aims to negotiate a long-term deal, ideally before contract lengths are limited to seven years starting September 16. Hughes's potential extension could be a significant financial commitment, as he is expected to seek a raise commensurate with his elite status, potentially even making him one of the highest-paid players in the league.

The Wild have a projected $46 million in salary cap space for the 2027-28 season, but re-signing Hughes could impact their ability to maintain a competitive roster as they also need to address other key players like Ryan Hartman and Blake Coleman who are set to become unrestricted free agents next summer.
