NHL GMs Discuss Trade Strategies and Rumors

As the NHL offseason progresses, general managers are actively engaging in trade discussions. The Buffalo Sabres have been linked to potential trades involving goaltender Connor Hellebuyck of the Winnipeg Jets.

According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, the Sabres were in talks with the Jets prior to the 2026 NHL Draft, but no deal was finalized. Friedman noted that Hellebuyck was willing to waive his no-movement clause to join the Sabres, reflecting their resurgence as a competitive team after making the playoffs for the first time since 2011.

With the Jets initially focused on obtaining the No. 4 overall pick from Buffalo in exchange for Hellebuyck, the negotiations remain active following the draft, where the Sabres stood pat and selected defenseman Daxon Rudolph and center Ilia Morozov.

The Sabres still retain key assets for a potential deal, with general manager Jarmo Kekalainen likely to revisit trade talks involving future draft picks. In addition to the Hellebuyck situation, the Sabres have been exploring trades for their goalie prospect Devon Levi, who has garnered interest from the Edmonton Oilers.

Friedman reported that the Oilers conducted significant research on Levi, whose future in Buffalo is uncertain given the depth in their goaltending lineup. With the Sabres looking to maximize Levi's potential before he risks clearing waivers, a trade to Edmonton could provide him with an opportunity in a franchise that has struggled to find stability in goal.
