The Florida Panthers have made notable changes to their goaltending lineup by acquiring Jacob Markstrom and Akira Schmid from the New Jersey Devils, which likely ends Sergei Bobrovsky's tenure in Florida.
According to The Hockey News, the Panthers traded Markstrom and left winger Angus Crookshank in exchange for winger Evan Rodrigues, center Jesper Boqvist, and left winger Ben Steeves. This acquisition raises questions about whether Florida will be better off with Markstrom and Schmid in net, especially given Bobrovsky's impressive playoff history, including a 2.20 goals-against average and three shutouts in 23 postseason games during the 2024-25 season.
While Markstrom was a second-team NHL All-Star in 2022, his playoff experience is limited, with his last performance yielding a 2.78 GAA and .911 save percentage in a five-game loss. As the NHL free agency period approaches, Bobrovsky is expected to test the market after the Panthers' decision to move forward without him.
Reports suggest multiple teams are interested in Bobrovsky, including the Edmonton Oilers, who have been searching for a top-level goaltender. However, the Oilers face challenges with their current goaltending situation, which includes Tristan Jarry, making it complicated to pursue Bobrovsky, who is looking for a long-term deal despite concerns about his recent performance.
The Panthers' goaltending strategy will significantly influence the league's competitive balance as teams adjust their rosters ahead of the upcoming season.
