As the 2026 NHL Draft approaches, teams are actively engaging in trades to reshape their rosters. The Ottawa Senators have made a significant move by acquiring left winger William Eklund from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for the No. 9 pick in the draft.
This trade comes on the heels of their earlier deal that sent captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers for multiple first-round picks. Eklund, the No. 7 pick in 2021, is expected to help fill the void left by Tkachuk, having scored 15 goals and 53 points in 78 games last season.
Meanwhile, the Toronto Maple Leafs are exploring their goaltending options, with pending free agent Sergei Bobrovsky becoming a focal point. Bobrovsky, who had a mixed 2025-26 season, could provide the Maple Leafs with veteran experience as they look to solidify their roster ahead of free agency.
Additionally, the NHL is eyeing expansion opportunities in Texas, with Austin and Houston as potential new locations for franchises, signaling the league's growth strategy and the excitement of possibly adding more teams to the NHL landscape.
Lastly, Mike Babcock has returned to the NHL as the head coach of the Edmonton Oilers, following his controversial resignation from the Columbus Blue Jackets. Babcock's hiring marks a new chapter for the Oilers, with high expectations set for his impact on the team moving forward.
