The New Jersey Devils have appointed Sunny Mehta as their new general manager, reflecting a shift towards a data-driven approach in their hockey operations. Mehta previously served as the director of hockey analytics for the Devils from 2014 to 2018, where he established the NHL's first full-time analytics department.
After stints with the Florida Panthers, where he played a key role in their success, Mehta is now tasked with improving the Devils' performance after they finished seventh in the Metropolitan Division.
Meanwhile, the 2026 NHL playoffs are set to begin on April 18, featuring matchups including the Carolina Hurricanes against the Ottawa Senators and the Pittsburgh Penguins facing the Philadelphia Flyers.
The playoffs mark a significant moment for the Buffalo Sabres, who return to postseason play after a 15-year absence, facing the Boston Bruins. In addition, uncertainty looms over Alex Ovechkin’s future with the Washington Capitals as he contemplates retirement after another successful season, having achieved his 20th 30-goal campaign despite the team’s struggles.
All these developments highlight the evolving landscape of the NHL as teams prepare for playoffs and adjust their rosters for future competitiveness.
