The NHL's free agency period has seen significant movements and notable contracts shaping the upcoming season's competitive landscape. The Detroit Red Wings made headlines by signing forward Viktor Arvidsson to a two-year contract with an average annual value of $5 million.
This signing has been praised by The Athletic, labeling it one of the best contracts of the offseason due to Arvidsson's impressive scoring record last season, where he netted 25 goals and 29 assists in 69 games with the Boston Bruins, despite injury concerns.
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Kings have been active but face a pressing need to replace captain Anze Kopitar after his retirement. General manager Ken Holland has brought in veterans like Mats Zuccarello and Erik Haula, but the Kings still seek a top-line center, with reports linking them to potential trades for players like Elias Pettersson and Dylan Larkin.
Lastly, the Montreal Canadiens' acquisition of Alex Newhook from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for draft picks is aging well, as Newhook has emerged as a valuable player, especially highlighted by his playoff performance where he scored ten points in 19 games.
His contract, carrying a cap hit of $2.9 million, adds further depth and flexibility to Montreal's roster as they build around their core players.
