NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced that franchise valuations in the league have surpassed the billion-dollar mark, signaling a significant shift in the NHL's financial landscape. During a press conference in Buffalo, Bettman stated that if the league were to expand, the expansion fee would be 'substantially more than a billion.' He emphasized that the fees would primarily serve to reimburse existing clubs for the revenue they would lose by adding a new franchise.
Bettman noted there are no immediate plans for expansion; however, discussions with potential markets are ongoing. He highlighted that ownership, market conditions, and arena infrastructure would be critical factors in any future expansion decisions, with several cities already expressing interest in joining the league.
Bettman also reiterated that the expansion fee is meant to maintain the economic integrity of the league, as adding teams means dividing national revenues among more franchises. This announcement follows a trend where the NHL has seen rising valuations, with previous expansion teams costing $500 million for the Vegas Golden Knights in 2017 and $650 million for the Seattle Kraken in 2021.
Bettman’s remarks underline not only the financial growth of the league but also its potential for future development and expansion opportunities, influenced by rising franchise values and interest from new markets.
