Canada's NHL expansion hopes diminish

The NHL is reportedly making strides towards adding an expansion team in Texas, specifically in either Houston or Austin, which could effectively end the hopes of Canadian fans for an eighth franchise.

According to The Hockey News, the league is at a point where they may award their 33rd team to Texas, leading to potential rivalries with the existing Dallas Stars. This move aligns with the NHL's preference for larger markets that can support franchises, as evidenced by the success of recent expansions like the Vegas Golden Knights and Seattle Kraken.

Furthermore, the NHL's Commissioner Gary Bettman appears to favor maintaining competitive balance, aiming for 17 teams in each conference, making a Texas team a more viable option than a return to Canadian markets.
