Garrett was a color commentator for over 40 years, primarily known for his work with the Vancouver Canucks, where he spent more than 20 years.

He began his broadcasting career in 1986 with Hockey Night in Canada and joined Sportsnet in 1998. During his career, he also served as the lead color commentator for Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames broadcasts.

Garrett joined Sportsnet's Canucks broadcast crew for the 2002-03 season, initially teaming with play-by-play commentator Jim Hughson, and later with John Shorthouse starting in the 2008-09 season. The 2022-23 season marked his last on Canucks broadcasts, after which he worked on national telecasts for three seasons.
