The New Jersey Devils are making significant roster adjustments ahead of the upcoming NHL season. General Manager Sunny Mehta announced that the team has signed forward Ben Steeves to a one-year, two-way contract with a cap hit of $850,000, and goaltender Jakub Malek to a two-year, two-way contract with an NHL average annual value of $875,000.
Malek, who recently completed his first North American season, had a record of 13-14-5 with a 2.75 goals-against average with the Utica Comets, alongside impressive performances in Europe. Meanwhile, the Devils also recently saw former defenseman Simon Nemec sign a five-year, $36.25 million deal with the Calgary Flames after being traded for a significant package, including two conditional first-round picks.
Chase Stillman, a former first-round pick, has signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings, further highlighting the changes in the Devils' forward lineup. As these roster moves unfold, a logjam at forward is becoming apparent, with 15 forwards currently on the projected roster, prompting discussions about potential trades or adjustments.
With an eye on the future, Mehta's offseason strategy reflects a commitment to enhancing team depth and performance.
