The New Jersey Devils have made significant roster changes in preparation for the upcoming NHL season. They have signed goaltender David Rittich to a one-year contract worth $1 million, enhancing their goaltending depth after trading Jacob Markstrom to the Florida Panthers.
Rittich, who has played for multiple teams including the New York Islanders and Los Angeles Kings, posted a 2.76 goals-against average and .894 save percentage in 30 games last season. Meanwhile, the Devils tendered a one-year offer sheet to restricted free agent center Barrett Hayton, valued at $4.775 million, which the Utah Mammoth can either match or let Hayton join New Jersey, in exchange for a second-round pick.
This offer sheet complicates Hayton's future with the Mammoth, as a match would prevent any trades for a year and allow him to enter unrestricted free agency in 2027. Additionally, the Devils have signed winger Riley Tufte to a one-year contract, further bolstering their depth.
With these moves under new General Manager Sunny Mehta, the Devils are clearly in a state of transition, aiming to reshape their team dynamics for the 2026-27 season. The offseason strategy reflects a focus on enhancing competitiveness while navigating significant player departures and acquisitions.
Furthermore, Jesper Boqvist is poised for a return to the Devils after winning the Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers, bringing valuable experience and growth from his previous seasons in the NHL and AHL.
Boqvist's journey has equipped him with insights that could benefit the Devils as they look to solidify their roster ahead of the new season.
