The New Jersey Devils are entering the 2026-27 season with a cost-effective goaltending strategy, featuring a tandem of Jake Allen and Nico Daws, both of whom have cap hits of less than $2 million. Devils general manager Sunny Mehta explained this approach by emphasizing the unpredictability of goaltending performance, stating, 'Because there is randomness at the position, I'm reluctant to invest significant assets there instead of in areas where the results may be more predictable' (Daily Faceoff).

This philosophy reflects a broader trend in the NHL regarding goaltending investments, as teams increasingly opt for cheaper alternatives to manage their salary cap effectively. Jake Allen, who posted a 2.74 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage last season, is viewed as the best chance for the Devils to compete, especially given his affordable contract of $1.8 million, which continues until the end of the 2029-30 season (Pucks and Pitchforks).

However, concerns remain about Daws' performance after a shaky preseason debut, which has led to speculation about the team's long-term plans in net. Despite these concerns, the Devils' financial flexibility allows them to focus investments in other areas of the roster, with the total salary for their goaltending trio being just $3.9 million (Pucks and Pitchforks).

While there have been discussions about potentially acquiring elite goalie Connor Hellebuyck from the Winnipeg Jets, the Devils appear committed to their current strategy, prioritizing cost efficiency over high-profile investments.
