Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche became the first player in the NHL this season to reach the 50-goal mark. In a game against the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday night, MacKinnon scored by maneuvering around three defenders and firing a wrist shot from distance past goaltender Kevin Lankinen.

This achievement marks the second time in MacKinnon's career that he has reached the 50-goal milestone, previously achieving it in the 2023-24 season with 51 goals and 89 assists for a total of 140 points.

Currently, MacKinnon has 71 assists in 72 games this season and is two goals away from setting a new career high. He is leading the league in goals, holding a three-goal advantage over Montreal Canadiens winger Cole Caufield, who has 47 goals in 73 games.

Other players with 40 goals include Connor McDavid, Nikita Kucherov, Jason Robertson, and Wyatt Johnston. The Avalanche are also on track to secure the Presidents Trophy as the top team in the regular season with 108 points, eight points ahead of the Dallas Stars, Buffalo Sabres, and Carolina Hurricanes.

Barring an unexpected collapse, Colorado will face the West's second wild card team in the playoffs, likely setting up a challenging second-round matchup against either Dallas or Minnesota. In his playoff career, MacKinnon has scored 55 goals and 70 assists for a total of 125 points in 95 games played.
