Montembeault Opposes Goalie Rotation Plans

Montreal Canadiens goaltender Samuel Montembeault has expressed his preference to avoid a three-way goalie rotation this upcoming season. According to a report from Richard Labbe in La Presse, the 29-year-old netminder is keen to secure a stable role in net, especially as he enters a crucial contract year following a challenging previous season.

Montembeault was reminded by Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes that one bad season does not define a goaltender's career, citing Jeremy Swayman's bounce-back from a poor year to a Vezina Trophy nomination.

However, the difference in their situations lies in Swayman's prior big-money contract, while Montembeault's current standing is precarious. Over the past season, Montembeault has cycled through goaltending partners, notably with Jakub Dobes and Jacob Fowler, and sees Dobes' recent three-year contract extension as a challenge for his own future with the team.

Despite the offseason being in full swing, Montembeault remains with the Canadiens as trade talks surrounding goaltenders have circulated. He is aware that being relegated to a backup role would diminish his chances of proving himself to potential suitors in the NHL.

Montembeault's struggles stemmed from the pressure he placed on himself, leading to a concerning mindset during games. The upcoming training camp will be crucial for Montembeault, as he aims to showcase his abilities under the scrutiny that comes with playing in Montreal.

The report indicates that while there are teams in need of goaltending help, the Canadiens are not looking to sell low on Montembeault, who was initially claimed off waivers in 2021 as a short-term solution during Carey Price's injury issues.
