During a recent post-game media availability, head coach Martin St-Louis acknowledged the Montreal Canadiens' ongoing struggles to secure wins in regulation. After a game against the Buffalo Sabres, which the Canadiens won but allowed a point to slip away, St-Louis pointed out the importance of closing out games effectively.
He highlighted that mental errors, such as failing to manage the puck and allowing the Sabres to capitalize on opportunities, are hurting the team's chances. St-Louis emphasized that the Canadiens must improve their focus and execution, especially when holding a lead, stating, "You lead by two; it should be over." The Canadiens currently find themselves ninth in the Eastern Conference, trailing the eighth-place Sabres, and are at risk of repeating the pattern that cost them playoff home-ice advantage last season.
As St-Louis noted, it's about understanding the balance between being aggressive and managing the game effectively, particularly given the team's youth and inexperience, which contributes to their growing pains.
