The Montreal Canadiens have signed defense prospect Luke Mittelstadt to a two-year, entry-level contract starting in the 2026-27 season, according to Daily Faceoff. Mittelstadt, 23, concluded his NCAA career at the University of Minnesota, where he served as team captain and recorded two goals and 21 points in 36 games during his senior year.
Over his four seasons, he accumulated 80 points, including 11 goals and 69 assists in 152 games. Drafted by the Canadiens in the seventh round of the 2023 NHL Draft, he joins the Laval Rocket on a minor-league contract for the remainder of the current season.
Mittelstadt is expected to bolster the Rocket's defense, especially in light of recent roster challenges, as he brings a strong defensive game and leadership experience from his collegiate career. His trajectory includes participation with Team USA at the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship, contributing three assists while helping the team secure a bronze medal.
This signing reflects the Canadiens' ongoing rebuilding efforts and their commitment to developing promising talents from the NCAA, as noted by Habs Eyes on the Prize.
