The Montreal Canadiens are focusing on enhancing their defensive lineup this offseason. According to Yahoo Sports, the Canadiens' blueline lacks physicality, and head coach Martin St-Louis reportedly has limited trust in defenseman Arber Xhekaj, who played only 1:52 in his last playoff game.

It is suggested that Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes should consider targeting Jeremy Lauzon of the Vegas Golden Knights, a stay-at-home defenseman who could provide stability to the third pairing.

Lauzon, a Quebec native, has shown he can be trusted by his coach and is known for his physical play, averaging 17:34 of ice time in his career. He is coming off a four-year contract with a $2 million cap hit, and while he may seek a raise, the Canadiens could accommodate this with the upcoming increase in the salary cap.

Meanwhile, Habs Eyes on the Prize reports that the Canadiens had pursued a trade for Toronto forward Matthew Knies, which included two first-round picks and a prospect. The failed trade reflects the Canadiens' readiness to transition from stockpiling draft picks to acquiring players who can contribute immediately.

This shift signals a clear intent to move towards contention for the Stanley Cup, rather than merely making the playoffs.
