As the offseason approaches, the Montreal Canadiens are facing critical decisions regarding their goaltending situation. Following a disappointing playoff run, the team is exploring trade options for Samuel Montembeault, who is considered the odd goalie out among their three netminders.
Speculation has arisen that the Edmonton Oilers could be a potential trade partner, with Montembeault ranked No. 11 on Frank Seravalli's trade board for the 2026 NHL offseason. The Oilers are evaluating their goaltending needs and might view Montembeault, who had a challenging season with an .872 save percentage and a 3.43 goals-against average, as a cost-effective upgrade.
Meanwhile, Brendan Gallagher has emerged as a top buyout candidate; purchasing out his final season could free up $2.7 million in cap space. Gallagher, who has spent his entire 14-year career with the Canadiens, recorded seven goals and 23 points this season, but his $6.5 million cap hit may be too high given his current production level.
The Canadiens have over $10.9 million in cap space, but buying out Gallagher could be seen as a necessary move to address their roster needs. While there is a possibility he may bounce back next season, the team’s need for flexibility could outweigh sentimentality in their decision-making process.
