The NHL has cleared Mike Babcock to return to coaching after an investigation into his brief tenure with the Columbus Blue Jackets. The league's statement confirmed that even under scrutiny, there was no basis to restrict his employment.
Babcock's hiring process is particularly significant as it follows allegations that surfaced during his time in Columbus, where he reportedly asked players for personal photos from their phones, which raised privacy concerns.
Both the NHL and NHL Players' Association expressed that while the allegations were concerning, they found no grounds to prevent his return. The Edmonton Oilers are poised to hire Babcock as their new head coach, following the dismissal of Kris Knoblauch after a disappointing playoff exit.
Reports indicate that Babcock has garnered support among veteran players on the Oilers, including superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. This marks a notable comeback for Babcock, who has a storied history in the NHL, including a Stanley Cup win with the Detroit Red Wings.
The Oilers plan to initiate contract negotiations soon, with a formal announcement expected next week, as they look to stabilize the franchise with a coach of Babcock's caliber.
