The Toronto Maple Leafs have undergone significant changes to their defense core this offseason, which they believe is crucial for their playoff aspirations. According to The Hockey News, the Maple Leafs added nine new players, with a focus on bolstering their defense, including veteran Darren Raddysh from the Tampa Bay Lightning and Emil Andrae from the Philadelphia Flyers.
A key factor for the success of this revamped defense will be the health of Chris Tanev, who played only 11 games last season but brings valuable experience and calmness to the ice. The Leafs' top-four defensemen now include Tanev, Raddysh, Jake McCabe, and Oliver Ekman-Larsson, creating a more solidified unit compared to last year.
Furthermore, the team's success will also depend on the performance of their star forwards and new goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, as they aim to compete in a tight Atlantic Division. David Alter from The Leafs Nation points out that the Maple Leafs are approaching the 2026-27 season with optimism, especially with a favorable schedule that features fewer back-to-back games compared to their rivals.
As the season opener approaches, the team's ability to integrate these new pieces under the guidance of new coach Jim Hiller will be pivotal for their playoff journey.
