The Toronto Maple Leafs are set to feature a new goaltending tandem for the upcoming season, highlighted by the acquisition of Sergei Bobrovsky. The Maple Leafs signed Bobrovsky, a veteran goaltender with a distinguished career including two Stanley Cups and two Vezina Trophies, to a three-year contract worth $7 million per season against the salary cap.

Despite being a future Hall of Famer, Bobrovsky is coming off his worst NHL campaign, having posted an .877 save percentage and a 3.07 goals-against average with the Florida Panthers. The unique aspect of this tandem is that Bobrovsky will be joined by Anthony Stolarz, who was his backup last season with the Panthers.

Stolarz has had a history of injuries and has never played more than 34 games in a season, whereas Bobrovsky has consistently been a workhorse, having started over 50 games in nine of the last ten years.

The Maple Leafs are strategizing how to best utilize Bobrovsky and Stolarz, especially given Bobrovsky's recent performance decline. Even at 37 years of age, he is expected to take on a significant workload, potentially starting over 50 games again.

General Manager John Chayka emphasized that adding Bobrovsky, along with depth forwards, will provide the team with flexibility in their lineup moving forward. With the new coaching staff's approach to managing the goaltenders, the success of the Maple Leafs could hinge on how effectively they deploy their new tandem next season.
