The Toronto Maple Leafs continue to undergo significant changes in their front office as they part ways with several key staff members. According to Maple Leafs Hotstove, the club has dismissed Assistant General Manager Darryl Metcalf, Director of Amateur Scouting Mark Leach, Senior Advisor of Player Personnel Dave Morrison, and Assistant General Manager of Player Development Hayley Wickenheiser.
These exits come as new management, including General Manager John Chayka and Senior Executive Advisor Mats Sundin, aims to reshape the organization after a disappointing season, which saw the team miss the playoffs for the first time in the Auston Matthews era.
Morrison had been with the organization since 2004, surviving multiple general managers and contributing to notable draft successes, but his departure signals a desire for a fresh start. Metcalf's focus on analytics was essential to the Leafs' strategy, yet his redundancy under Chayka's analytically-driven approach may have led to his exit.
Wickenheiser, overseeing player development since 2022, leaves as the organization has struggled to develop young talent effectively. The Maple Leafs are also re-evaluating their overall scouting and development strategies as they aim for organizational alignment from the AHL to the NHL.
Following the dismissal of these staff members, the future of the analytics department remains uncertain, with potential further changes on the horizon, as reported by The Leafs Nation.
