Anze Kopitar of the Los Angeles Kings has been named a finalist for the prestigious Lady Byng Trophy, recognized for his sportsmanship and playing ability. This marks Kopitar's fifth nomination and he previously won the award in the 2015-16, 2022-23, and 2024-25 seasons.
In the 2025-26 season, he recorded 38 points with 12 goals and 26 assists while committing only five minor penalties. Alongside him, Cole Caufield of the Montreal Canadiens and Ottawa Senators defenseman Jake Sanderson were also named finalists.
Caufield scored a career-high 51 goals this season, while Sanderson totaled 54 points with just eight penalty minutes. Meanwhile, Kings forward Quinton Byfield revealed he played through significant injuries, including torn obliques on both sides, yet only missed three games during the regular season.
Byfield showed resilience, finishing the season strong with 11 goals in the last 16 games. Additionally, the Kings face uncertainty with pending unrestricted free agents Andrei Kuzmenko, who was non-committal about his future with the team, and Scott Laughton, who expressed interest in extending his contract with the Kings.
Following a disappointing playoff exit against the Colorado Avalanche, the offseason will be crucial for the franchise as they aim to restructure and build for the future, especially as Kopitar concludes his illustrious career with the Kings as their all-time points leader.
