Jack Hughes, the New Jersey Devils star, has recently voiced his frustration regarding the Hockey Hall of Fame's possession of the puck from his golden goal at the Olympics. In an interview with ESPN, Hughes expressed his belief that he should have ownership of the puck, stating, "I'm trying to get it.
Like, that's bulls--- that the Hockey Hall of Fame has it, in my opinion. Why would they have that puck?" This sentiment has sparked a divided reaction among fans on social media. Some fans support Hughes, arguing that the puck represents a significant personal achievement, while others assert that it belongs to hockey history and should be preserved at the Hall.
Philip Pritchard, curator for the Hockey Hall of Fame, clarified that the puck was never Hughes' to own, as it was donated to the Hall by the International Ice Hockey Federation with a documented paper trail.
The Hall aims to preserve artifacts related to the sport's history, and while players often keep pucks from milestone moments in the NHL, Olympic items are managed differently. Hughes acknowledged the honor of having the puck displayed at the Hall, but he still believes that players should retain such personal artifacts from their careers.
The ongoing discussion highlights the complexities of player recognition and the Hall of Fame's policies regarding historical artifacts in hockey.
