The IIHF World Championship has commenced with notable performances from Canada and Finland. Canada opened their tournament against Sweden, securing a 5-3 victory. John Tavares, Ryan O'Reilly, Dylan Holloway, Connor Brown, and Dylan Cozens contributed with goals, while goaltender Jet Greaves made 22 saves.
Tavares scored just 2:21 into the game, and O'Reilly doubled the lead with a backhand goal later in the first period. Connor Brown's goal in the final period proved decisive for Canada's win. Finland also had a strong start, defeating Germany 3-1 in their opener.
Aleksander Barkov's contributions were crucial in Finland's success. Canada is aiming to reclaim its status as the most successful nation in the tournament, having not won since three years ago. Sidney Crosby, who joined the team after the Pittsburgh Penguins' early playoff exit, plays a key role as an alternate captain alongside Tavares and Macklin Celebrini, who serves as captain.
Canada's next match is scheduled against Italy.
