The Carolina Hurricanes have taken a commanding 3-2 lead in the Stanley Cup Final after a decisive 4-2 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 5. Andrei Svechnikov shone brightly, scoring twice, while Sebastian Aho finally found the net for the first time in six games.
The scoring began with Pavel Dorofeyev netting a power-play goal for Vegas, assisted by Jack Eichel. However, Carolina quickly responded with Jordan Staal redirecting a pass from Nikolaj Ehlers to tie the game.
Staal's goal extended his scoring streak to five games, tying the record for the longest goal streak in Stanley Cup Final history. The second period saw the Hurricanes capitalize on Vegas's undisciplined play, with Svechnikov scoring the first of his two goals after a penalty by Brayden McNabb, and shortly after, Aho scored to extend Carolina's lead to 3-1.
Despite a late push from Vegas, highlighted by Dorofeyev's second goal, the Hurricanes maintained their advantage. Goaltender Brandon Bussi made 22 saves, helping to secure the win as the series shifts back to Vegas for Game 6, where the Hurricanes can clinch the championship.
Carolina's coach Rod Brind'Amour highlighted Aho's strong play, indicating that his contributions could be a significant boost for the team moving forward. The Golden Knights, meanwhile, face challenges as key player William Karlsson left the game due to injury and their frequent penalties proved costly.
Historically, teams that win Game 5 in a tied series have gone on to win the Stanley Cup 20 out of 27 times, setting the stage for a high-stakes Game 6 in Las Vegas.
