Hurricanes' playoff prospects clouded by goaltending issues

The Carolina Hurricanes are entering the playoffs with significant doubts surrounding their goaltending situation, despite a strong regular season, according to The Hockey News. The team has consistently performed well, finishing first or second in their division for the past five seasons, but they have struggled in the playoffs, particularly in the Eastern Conference finals where they have only one win since 2018-19.

Last season, goaltender Frederik Andersen posted a troubling save percentage of .833 or worse in three of four games against the Florida Panthers, while Pyotr Kochetkov fared even worse with .800 or worse in his two appearances.

This year, Brandon Bussi has taken over as part of the goaltending tandem with Andersen, boasting a solid record of 28 wins and 6 losses, but his performance has dipped recently, with a save percentage of .895 or worse in eight of his last twelve games.

The Hurricanes' offensive production also dwindled during last year's playoffs, and with a roster similar to last year's, there are concerns that they may not be able to overcome their historical issues.

The team's lack of a superstar talent may be a contributing factor to their playoff struggles, as they have failed to score more than three goals in the playoffs previously, raising skepticism about their ability to advance deep into the postseason again this year.

Until the Hurricanes demonstrate they can perform under pressure, doubts about their playoff viability will linger, as noted by The Hockey News.
