The Carolina Hurricanes have made a significant move by acquiring the UFA rights to veteran defenseman John Carlson from the Anaheim Ducks. In this transaction, the Hurricanes sent defenseman Kyle Masters and the 192nd pick of the 2026 NHL Draft to Anaheim.
Carlson, who is a pending unrestricted free agent, previously signed an eight-year contract worth $8 million annually and had a productive offensive season, recording 14 goals and 60 points across 71 games with both the Capitals and Ducks.
Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky has a narrow window of four days to negotiate a contract before Carlson becomes a free agent on July 1. The Hurricanes currently have $11.1 million in salary cap space, which should be enough to accommodate Carlson's next deal, projected to be around two years at $9 million total, according to The Athletic.
Moreover, the addition of Carlson could bolster the Hurricanes' blue line as they prepare to defend their Stanley Cup title, especially with the recent news that top scorer Seth Jarvis will be sidelined for 4-6 months following shoulder surgery.
This acquisition not only strengthens Carolina's defense but also positions Carlson against his former team, the Capitals, in the Metropolitan Division.
