Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog achieved a historic milestone by winning both the Bill Masterton Trophy and the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award during the 2025-26 season. According to The Hockey News, the Masterton Trophy is awarded to the player who best exemplifies perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey, while the Messier Award recognizes outstanding leadership qualities.

Landeskog's journey back to the ice was remarkable, as he returned to play after missing three full regular seasons due to knee injuries, including undergoing four major surgeries. This season, he contributed 14 goals and 21 assists in 60 games and played a key role in the Avalanche's playoff run, scoring six goals and totaling 11 points in 13 playoff games.

His perseverance in overcoming a significant knee injury and his leadership on and off the ice set a strong example in the NHL. Notably, Landeskog is the first player in league history to win both the Masterton and Messier Awards in the same season, as highlighted by Mile High Sticking.

His leadership extends beyond the rink, contributing to local community initiatives aimed at growing youth participation in hockey, and supporting anti-bullying efforts. Following the announcement, Landeskog expressed gratitude to his teammates and acknowledged that leadership is a team effort, stating, 'no leader is going to sit here and take the honor and accept the award on his own.' This recognition not only honors Landeskog's individual achievements but also sets a precedent for leadership within the league.
