The Florida Panthers have made significant moves in preparation for the upcoming NHL season by acquiring goaltender Akira Schmid from the Vegas Golden Knights. Schmid, who is 26 years old, had previously played 82 NHL games and last season recorded a 16-10-6 record with a 2.59 goals against average and .893 save percentage.
Panthers president Bill Zito expressed excitement about Schmid’s addition, highlighting his poise in high-pressure situations. In another strategic move, the Panthers secured the negotiating rights to defenseman Radko Gudas from the Anaheim Ducks, allowing them to negotiate a potential contract ahead of free agency.
Gudas, a fan favorite during his previous stint with Florida from 2020 to 2023, brings experience and physicality to the team's defense. The Panthers also made key decisions regarding their restricted free agents, extending qualifying offers to forwards Ben Steeves and defensemen Tobias Bjornfot and Mikulas Hovorka, while three others will become unrestricted free agents.
Lastly, Garnet Hathaway has joined the Panthers from the Philadelphia Flyers, known for his physical play and two-way ability, further enhancing Florida's competitiveness as they chase a Stanley Cup.
