The Edmonton Oilers have secured defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin with a two-year, $3.5 million contract extension. Mukhamadullin's agents confirmed this news, indicating a commitment from the Oilers to enhance their defensive lineup following his acquisition from the San Jose Sharks in the Darnell Nurse trade.
Mukhamadullin, a 24-year-old restricted free agent, recorded a career-high 12 points in the 2025-26 season, averaging 17 minutes of ice time over 50 games. Drafted 20th overall by the New Jersey Devils in 2020, Mukhamadullin has shown potential with his strong shot and offensive upside, although he's still developing defensively.
His new deal marks a significant raise from his previous $1 million salary, and he will return to restricted free agency upon its expiration. Oilers general manager Stan Bowman expressed optimism about Mukhamadullin's growth and versatility on defense, noting his ability to play on both sides of the ice.
This signing also leaves the Oilers with $6.5 million in cap space as they continue to build their roster for the upcoming season.
