With just two weeks remaining in the NHL's regular season, the Edmonton Oilers have nearly secured their playoff spot, with a magic number sitting at six points. The focus now shifts to potential first-round opponents, primarily the Vegas Golden Knights, Utah Mammoth, San Jose Sharks, and Los Angeles Kings.
The Golden Knights, who the Oilers eliminated in the second round last year, currently hold a record of 34 wins and 42 losses. Their star power, including players like Jack Eichel, Mark Stone, and Shea Theodore, remains a significant strength, but they struggle defensively and have the worst five-on-five save percentage in the league.
The Oilers may also face the Utah Mammoth, who have a strong offensive presence with six 20-goal scorers and solid goaltending, but their inexperience could be a concern. The San Jose Sharks present a unique challenge with 19-year-old MVP candidate Macklin Celebrini, whose performance is critical to the team's success.
However, without him, the Sharks' five-on-five play drastically declines. Lastly, the Los Angeles Kings, who have a slim chance of catching up to Vegas, excel in goaltending but lack offensive consistency, ranking 29th in five-on-five goals per 60 minutes.
As the playoffs approach, understanding these teams' strengths and weaknesses is crucial for the Oilers' strategy and success.
