Despite a recent victory, the Edmonton Oilers continue to face significant scrutiny regarding their defensive play. Darnell Nurse, a key defenceman, expressed his dissatisfaction with his performance, stating he is currently a minus-12 with 20 points this season.

He acknowledged the need for improvement and accountability, emphasizing, 'if we're going to reach the goal we want to reach, I have to step up for sure.' During a recent California road trip, the Oilers lost two out of three games, highlighting their defensive struggles as they allowed a total of 11 goals in those losses.

Head coach Kris Knoblauch noted that while there have been improvements in defending against rushes, the team still makes critical mistakes in their defensive zone. The Oilers have now acquired veteran Connor Murphy, who is expected to provide stability on the blue line, although it remains unclear when he will join the team.

As they prepare to face the Ottawa Senators, who also struggle defensively, the Oilers need to tighten their play to maintain their wild-card position in the Western Conference. With 21 games left in the season, the urgency to improve their defensive game has never been more apparent.
