The Edmonton Oilers find themselves in a challenging position in their playoff series against the Anaheim Ducks, currently trailing 2-1. Despite scoring 12 goals in the first three games, the Oilers' defensive performance has come under intense scrutiny, as they've allowed 16 goals in the same span, including a particularly tough 7-4 loss in Game 3.

A detailed analysis reveals that at five-on-five, the Oilers rank 12th among playoff teams in expected goals against, with their top defensive pairing of Evan Bouchard and Mattias Ekholm struggling significantly, dropping from an elite 56 percent expected goal share in the regular season to just 49 percent in the playoffs.

Connor McDavid's performance has also been underwhelming, generating fewer chances than he has allowed, prompting concerns about the overall defensive structure of the team. Goaltending has not been exempt from criticism either; Connor Ingram, who took over from Tristan Jarry, has posted a Goals Against Average of 4.70, the worst among playoff goalies, and has been plagued by rebound control issues.

With injuries affecting key players like Jason Dickinson and Adam Henrique, the Oilers' penalty kill has suffered significantly, ranking as the worst among playoff teams in high-quality chances allowed.

Heading into Game 4, the Oilers are under pressure to rectify these defensive shortcomings to avoid further jeopardizing their playoff aspirations. It remains to be seen whether adjustments will be made by coach Kris Knoblauch, who faces a crucial test against the Ducks' aggressive forecheck as the series continues.
