For the Edmonton Oilers, this season has been marked by significant ups and downs. Their records in October and November were mediocre at 5-4-3 and 6-6-2 respectively. However, they rebounded with a solid December, ending with a 9-5-1 record, and began January strong with a 3-1-1 start.
Unfortunately, they lost three consecutive games heading into the Olympic break, including a 4-3 loss to the Calgary Flames. With 24 games remaining in the regular season, the Oilers find themselves in the middle of a competitive Western Conference playoff race.
Currently, the Colorado Avalanche lead the Central Division with a league-best 37-9-9 record and a 0.755 points percentage. The Minnesota Wild and Dallas Stars sit second and third in the Central, each holding a comfortable double-digit lead over the next closest team.
In the Pacific Division, the Vegas Golden Knights hold the top spot with a 27-16-14 record, just four points ahead of the Oilers, who have accumulated 64 points. The Seattle Kraken and Anaheim Ducks are also in contention for the top of the division, with the Kraken having a .563 points percentage and the Ducks slightly ahead in the standings.
The Oilers' current points percentage is 0.552, projected to be the lowest in the last seven seasons. While their playoff odds remain favorable, simply securing a wildcard spot might lead to a first-round matchup against Colorado.
Prioritizing a top-three finish in the Pacific Division is critical. The Oilers may benefit from the Olympic break, especially players outside of McDavid and Draisaitl. The team is expected to return healthier, with Zach Hyman and Jake Walman back in the lineup, and potential additions at the trade deadline could provide a meaningful boost.
Additionally, Paul Coffey has rejoined the coaching staff, which may help improve the team's defensive play and puck movement as they head into the final stretch of the season. Time will tell how these factors will influence the Oilers as they aim for a stronger finish.
