Frederik Andersen, the Edmonton Oilers' new goaltender, expressed his excitement about joining the team during a virtual media availability on July 6. Andersen emphasized the Oilers' aspirations to win, stating, "It's a team that's got aspirations to try to win.
And like I said, they've been close. It would be really awesome to be part of the team to get over the hump." The 36-year-old goaltender, fresh off a successful playoff run where he went 13-2, signed a one-year deal worth $1 million against the salary cap, with additional bonuses that could total up to $1.8 million based on his game participation.
He noted that the deal's structure provides flexibility for the Oilers as they look to build a contender. Andersen acknowledged the importance of having elite players like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl on the roster, saying, "They've made me and the rest of the league look silly a lot of times before in games, but now it's just going to be in practice." He also discussed the potential for a three-goalie tandem, as he and returning netminder Tristan Jarry will compete for game time alongside up-and-comer Devon Levi.
Andersen reflected on his experience playing under Oilers head coach Mike Babcock during his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs, highlighting the positive impact Babcock had on his game. He stated, "He was a great coach.
Great Xs and Os. I thought he got a lot out of our group, and we were a young team then. I'm just excited to see what we can do together in this new opportunity."
