The Edmonton Oilers have made significant moves to improve their roster by signing defenseman Connor Murphy to a five-year, $20.5 million contract, and forward Jason Dickinson to a five-year, $20 million deal.
Murphy, who is 33 years old, joined the Oilers from the Chicago Blackhawks during the March trade deadline, contributing four points in 20 games with Edmonton. His defensive skills were highlighted as the Oilers' goals-against average improved from 3.34 to 2.90 after his acquisition.
Dickinson, also a trade deadline addition, is expected to enhance the team's depth and versatility. Both players' contracts reflect the Oilers' commitment to building a competitive team around stars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
The team aims to address its defensive challenges after a disappointing playoff performance, where they struggled, particularly in goal with a .866 save percentage. General manager Stan Bowman has about $7.4 million in salary cap space remaining for further roster enhancements.
The Oilers are also considering the potential hiring of Mike Babcock as head coach, which both Dickinson and Murphy expressed interest in, noting a desire for accountability and leadership within the organization.
Overall, these recent signings signal the Oilers' intent to balance veteran experience with their roster needs as they prepare for the upcoming season.
