The Edmonton Oilers' coaching search has taken a controversial turn as they reportedly consider hiring Mike Babcock. According to TSN's Darren Dreger, the Oilers are consulting with the NHL Players Association to ensure there are no objections to Babcock's hiring, given his controversial past.
Babcock resigned from the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2023 before coaching a single game amid allegations of invading player privacy by asking them to share personal photos. This follows a history of player mistreatment allegations during his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs, including an incident involving rookie Mitch Marner, whom Babcock asked to rank his teammates' work ethic before sharing the results with the team.
Babcock's coaching tenure includes notable successes, like winning the Stanley Cup with the Detroit Red Wings and leading Team Canada to Olympic gold, but his recent actions have left many questioning his fit for the Oilers amidst their attempts to revitalize their coaching staff.
Despite his history, Babcock has reportedly met with several members of the Oilers' leadership group, which may help alleviate concerns regarding his potential hiring. However, the Oilers' management may need to carefully navigate player sentiments and the NHLPA's stance before making any official decisions.
