The Anaheim Ducks have officially matched the Philadelphia Flyers' record-setting five-year, $90 million offer sheet for center Leo Carlsson, retaining him at an average annual value of $18 million, the highest in NHL history.
Carlsson expressed excitement about remaining with the Ducks, stating, "I always wanted to be a Duck. It's my home, too." Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek acknowledged he was surprised by the magnitude of the offer but confirmed that matching it was an easy decision given Carlsson's potential as a franchise player.
The contract structure is heavily based on signing bonuses, with only $4.7 million in base salary. The Ducks' owners, Henry and Susan Samueli, expressed confidence in Carlsson's growth, stating, "We have extremely high expectations for Leo." Meanwhile, the Flyers, who had hoped to acquire a franchise center, must now refocus on their roster without Carlsson, while still maintaining significant cap space for other transactions.
Carlsson's impressive performance last season included 29 goals and 67 points in 70 games, and he played a pivotal role in the Ducks' playoff run, which included a victory over the Edmonton Oilers. The Ducks now face challenges in re-signing other key restricted free agents, particularly Cutter Gauthier, as they navigate the complexities of their salary cap situation post-Carlsson's contract match.
Verbeek noted that adjustments will be required going forward due to the new financial landscape created by Carlsson's deal. Carlsson reflected on the business side of hockey, stating, "It's a lot of business in hockey...but it's just too good to pass on." The Ducks' decision to match the offer sheet is expected to have lasting implications on how teams approach restricted free agents in the future, as the Flyers' aggressive move puts pressure on other franchises to think creatively about player acquisitions.
