The Detroit Red Wings had a transformative 2026 NHL Draft, significantly reshaping their prospect pool. They selected goaltender Michal Orsulak with the 79th pick, adding to their already strong goaltending prospects, which includes six goalies, three of whom are named Michal.
Orsulak had a standout season with the Prince Albert Raiders, posting a .907 save percentage and a 2.22 goals against average, and is committed to Northeastern next season. In a notable trade move, the Red Wings sent goaltending prospect Sebastian Cossa to the Utah Mammoth for the 23rd overall pick, which they used to select forward J.P.
Hurlbert. Cossa, drafted 15th overall in 2021, had spent most of his career in the AHL and became expendable with the arrival of Trey Augustine. They also drafted Victor Plante, brother of Max Plante, with the 47th pick, further strengthening family ties within the organization.
General Manager Steve Yzerman addressed the ongoing trade speculation surrounding captain Dylan Larkin, confirming that while Larkin has requested a trade, no guarantees have been made regarding a move as the team looks to build a competitive roster.
This draft weekend underscored the Red Wings' commitment to their long-term vision and improvement, as they added seven new players to the organization, including five forwards, one defenseman, and one goaltender.
