The Dallas Stars have signed veteran winger David Perron to a one-year contract, according to The Hockey News. This signing comes in response to early-season injuries affecting key players, including Matt Duchene and Wyatt Johnston.
The 38-year-old Perron, a Stanley Cup champion with extensive NHL experience, has played 1,239 regular-season games and 110 playoff games. He has consistently produced, with at least 20 goals in seven seasons and 40 points in 12 seasons.
Although his production has declined somewhat as he ages, Perron is expected to provide depth and secondary scoring, primarily on the third or fourth line. Stars general manager Jim Nill opted for Perron instead of pursuing other free agents like Vladimir Tarasenko or Patrik Laine, believing Perron's experience and positive demeanor will benefit the team.
With a salary of $850,000, Perron's signing leaves the Stars with approximately $1.4 million in cap space. While Perron may not significantly elevate the Stars above rivals like the Colorado Avalanche and Minnesota Wild, his ability to contribute in high-stakes situations could prove valuable as the Stars aim for a successful season.
This season could potentially be Perron's last in the NHL, making his contributions to the team even more meaningful.
