The overtime goal scored by the Anaheim Ducks against the Edmonton Oilers has sparked considerable debate regarding the NHL's goal-line technology. According to The Hockey News, the Ducks' winning goal came after Ryan Poehling's centering pass deflected off Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse and went through the legs of goalie Tristan Jarry.

An overhead camera showed Jarry's skate hovering over the puck and the goal line, leading to confusion on whether the puck fully crossed the line. The on-ice official signaled a goal, and despite a review, the NHL Situation Room ruled it a goal, yet the evidence used was inconclusive.

Former Oilers goalie Devan Dubnyk criticized the decision, highlighting the lack of a clear view and questioning the influence of the referee's on-ice call. He stated, 'It's completely outrageous that they called it a goal on the ice,' expressing concern over the subjective nature of the review process.

The Hockey News emphasized that improved puck-tracking technology could have clarified the situation, as the NHL possesses the capability for puck tracking but has not yet implemented it for video reviews.

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly acknowledged the challenges in creating definitive technology to reliably detect pucks crossing the goal line but mentioned ongoing efforts to improve the system. This controversy underlines the need for advancements in the league's review processes, especially as such calls can significantly impact playoff outcomes, with the Ducks now leading the series 3-1 after their 4-3 victory over the Oilers.
