Connor Bedard has officially signed a five-year, $75 million contract with the Chicago Blackhawks, making him the third-highest-paid player in the NHL, trailing only Leo Carlsson and Kirill Kaprizov. This deal, which averages $15 million per year, reflects the Blackhawks' commitment to building around their young star as they continue their rebuilding process.
General Manager Kyle Davidson emphasized Bedard's impact, stating, "Connor has continuously defied our expectations since being drafted, and has quickly established himself as an elite player in the NHL." Despite a successful season where he scored a career-high 30 goals and 75 points in 69 games, Bedard is set to miss the start of the upcoming season due to a left shoulder injury sustained during the offseason.
The Blackhawks, who finished with a 29-39-14 record last year, are optimistic about their future, especially with young talents like Frank Nazar and Bowen Byram joining the roster. Bedard's new contract solidifies his role as a pivotal part of the franchise's direction and possibly positions him to become the team's next captain, as teammates believe he possesses the leadership qualities necessary for the role.
The contract was finalized just ten days after his surgery, marking a significant step in securing the future of the franchise as they aim to return to playoff contention after several years of struggle.
